Class 8, Botnets & zombie networks

A botnet is a number of Internet computers that have been set up to send transmissions like spams or viruses to other computers through the Internet, causing it to fail. It is also the group of Internet connected programs for communication purposes. These compromised botnet computers are usually referred to as a zombie. It is still a big problem and threat to the Internet world.

The picture above shows how a botnet is used to send spam email. The first step shows that a user sends out viruses to other users’ computer through Internet. The “bot” then infects the computer and eventually a spammer buys the services of the botnet from the original user/operator. Then the last step shows through using the control panel on the web server, they send out spam messages.
Zombie is referred to an infected computer, covertly taken over, to practice mal-task. The botnets of zombie computers are used to spread spam emails and failure of service. Again, it is very covertly taken so that the most of the owners would not able to know how their computers are used in this way.

This video talks briefly about what botnet is.
